Managing Nausea With Delta 8 THC

Dealing with a gut-wrenching symptom like nausea makes day-to-day activities a challenge.

Thanks to its ability to bind to CB1 receptors located in the brain, delta 8 THC may be a great solution for some people experiencing nausea. The CB1 receptor seems to play a role in the body’s natural regulation of food intake, nausea and vomiting, which we discuss below in this article.

Also, anecdotal evidence shows that some people tend to feel less dizzy or “stomach sick” after taking a controlled amount of this cannabis compound.

But how can delta 8 be used to manage this symptom? Let’s have a closer look.

Delta 8 Gummies

Our delta 8 gummies offer 25 mg of pure delta 8 THC, formulated to help you manage daily stress and improve overall health and wellness. If you’re looking for an effective and enjoyable product, these are the gummies for you. You’ll love the juicy mixed berries flavor, and with 8 gummies per pack, you get a total of 200mg of delta 8.

How to Use Delta 8 THC for Nausea

There are three main things you should consider when taking delta 8 THC for nausea.

1. Method of Consumption

The way you consume delta 8 THC for nausea matters. The product you select influences how this cannabinoid is absorbed in the body and how fast it provides relief.

You want to make sure that the product you use is fast-acting.

This means that some products take a while to work after being absorbed in the body, while others offer quick relief.

Inhalation vs. Oral Consumption

The most fast-acting method of consumption is inhalation, commonly achieved through smoking and vaping or with products like hemp flower and cannabinoid vaporizers.

Inhalation through smoking and vaping brings cannabinoids directly to the lungs and into the bloodstream. So, when smoking delta 8 hemp flower for nausea, you can expect its effects to kick in within 10 to 15 minutes or less.

This means that delta 8 flower is a preferred product by people with nausea because it soothes the body almost immediately. Keep in mind that although it’s quick to act and potent, the effects of delta 8 after smoking hemp flower don’t persist for long. They typically last up to an hour.

In comparison, delta 8 edibles are taken through the oral route, so they pass quite the road to the bloodstream. It takes two to three hours before delta 8 gummies kick in, but once they do, their effects can last up to 8 hours.

So, delta 8 gummies, capsules, and other edibles are ideal for someone who doesn’t need immediate relief, but wants to experience prolonged relief. The best approach is to combine both delta 8 hemp flower and delta 8 gummies. First, take a pre-roll for immediate relief and supplement with a delta 8 gummy for prolonged effects.

2. Dosage

How much delta 8 to take for nausea?

One of the key things to remember when trying a cannabinoid product for managing symptoms like pain and nausea is to start with the lowest dose possible.

The baseline dose for delta 8 THC for nausea is 5 mg a day.

Keep in mind that this dose is to get your feet wet, so consider increasing it after a day or two to 10 mg.

You can determine your ideal baseline dose of delta 8 for nausea based on your weight. Here’s a simple formula to help you calculate:

(0.05) x (your body weight in lbs.)

So, if you weigh 140 lbs, begin with 7 mg of delta 8 per day.

If you’re an experienced user, you can jump into a medium-strength daily dose, double the baseline dose. Calculate it using this formula:

(0.1) x (your body weight in lbs)

So, if you weigh 140 lbs, start with 14 mg of delta 8 per day.

It’s important to calculate the strength of the delta 8 products correctly to get the right personal dose. Products like gummies and capsules come with a premeasured delta 8 dose, so you know how much you’re consuming. But, with hemp flower, it’s a bit difficult to determine how much you’re intaking.

The simplest way to calculate the amount of delta 8 per hemp flower pre-roll is to consider the percentage of delta 8 distillate coated on the pre-roll.

In a one-gram pre-roll (1000 mg), 10% of delta 8 equals 100 mg.

Determining the amount of d8 you’ll consume with a single puff is very challenging, so take it slow and increase puff after puff.

Is a Delta 8 Dosage the Same as Your CBD Dosage?

Try to avoid approaching dosing delta 8 THC as you do CBD.

If you take a fixed amount of CBD per day, you can keep doing that while starting with tiny amounts of delta 8 THC. This is because CBD is non-psychoactive, so even if consumed in high doses, it won’t make you feel “high” as you already know. Delta 8 is intoxicating and much more potent than CBD, so you need to be careful when starting with this cannabinoid.

3. Quality of Product

Premium delta 8 THC products provide the desired effect and come with a Certificate of Analysis.

A lot can be said about the quality of delta 8 products in the current hemp market. But, if you want to get nausea relief, it’s important to choose a tested delta 8 product.

You want to avoid consuming a low-quality product that can potentially make your nausea worse due to the presence of harmful contaminants, such as heavy metals, pesticides, or residual solvents.

The hemp market is largely unregulated, which means you shouldn’t buy cannabinoid products from unverified vendors. And by “unverified”, we mean vendors that offer no quality assurance, like a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) that shows the purity of the product and level of cannabinoids.

Reputable manufacturers, like Mr. Hemp Flower, provide a verified CoA issued by a third-party lab for every product. Also, our products are Farm Bill compliant, which means they contain

less than 0.3% delta 9 THC.

Can You Take Delta 8 THC for Nausea Without Getting High?

Delta 8 THC is unlikely to get you “high” if consumed in microdoses.

Delta 8 THC is mildly intoxicating, so you can expect to get high after using it. However, many people want to experience the benefits of this cannabinoid without getting intoxicated. This is possible to achieve by consuming microdoses or anything between 1mg and 5mg of delta 8 THC.

People sensitive to THC may still get intoxicated, but most people can get through their day by taking tiny doses of delta 8 THC without getting its psychoactive effects.

Does Delta 8 THC Work for Nausea?

Delta 8’s ability to prevent nausea is tightly connected to its influence on the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The endocannabinoid system is a cell-signaling system that regulates essential functions in the body. This system provides homeostasis by mediating sleep, memory and learning, pain, metabolism, fertility, etc.

The endocannabinoid system is made of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes.

The two main cannabinoid receptors of the ECS are the CB1 and CB2 receptors. The CB1 receptor is distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous system and mediates:

  • Psychoactivity
  • Memory processing
  • Pain regulation
  • Motor control

The CB1 receptor has also been identified in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and may play a role in the regulation of food intake, nausea and vomiting, and intestinal inflammation.

By binding to the CB1 receptor, delta 8 THC produces its nausea-reducing effects.

A 2011 review published in the British Journal of Pharmacology demonstrates considerable evidence about the effectiveness of the ECS in regulating nausea and vomiting in humans and animals.

The authors of the review conclude that cannabinoids are useful in treating difficult nausea symptoms by acting as agonists of the CB1 receptor. An agonist is a substance that initiates a psychological response when combined with a receptor. This shows that delta 8, delta 9 THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids show significant promise for the treatment of difficult cases of nausea.

What is Delta 8 THC?

Delta 8 tetrahydrocannabinol is a valuable hemp cannabinoid naturally found in low concentrations (less than 0.1%) in CBD flower.

Delta 8 is delta 9’s cousin because they have an almost identical chemical structure and similar properties. Delta 8 THC is delta 9 THC’s analogue with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, and neuroprotective properties.

This means that delta 8 may help with nausea and vomiting, anxiety, and low appetite, among others.

Delta 8 THC expresses lower psychotropic activity than delta 9 THC. Studies show that delta 8 THC is 50 to 75 percent less potent than delta-9 THC, which is why it causes a mild high that keeps the users clear-headed and active.

Does Delta 8 THC Increase Appetite?

Delta 8 THC can be a potent appetite stimulant — even more so than delta 9 THC.

Nausea affects your appetite, making it hard to consume food or keep it down. Nutritious food and fluid intake helps your body recover faster, so it’s important to gain some of the lost appetite.

The main way delta 8 helps with appetite is by calming your nausea. When you’re not experiencing this gut-wrenching symptom, you can instantly eat your bowl of soup or any other nutritious food.

In addition, delta 8 may make you hungrier or give you the “munchies.” Studies on mice show that delta 8 THC is a stronger appetite stimulant than delta 9, which has an extensive anecdotal history of making people very hungry. Typically, half an hour after consuming this cannabinoid, mice showed increased hunger.

When taking delta 8 for nausea, make sure to avoid high doses, as you don’t want to achieve the opposite effect and start to feel dizzy from this cannabinoid. Keep in mind that very high doses can cause extreme side effects, such as [prolonged nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, and rapid heartbeat.

Research on Delta 8 THC and Nausea

There are a couple of U.S. patents on the use of delta 8 THC. The first one relates to the conversion of CBD to delta 8 THC, and the second one relates to the antiemetic properties of delta 8 THC. The research for the latter patent discovered that delta 8 THC is up to 200% more effective an antiemetic than delta 9 THC.

Compared to other benefits of this cannabinoid, its antiemetic effects are best explored. Although little evidence is available, the results are promising.

A 1995 study performed by world-renewed cannabis scientist Raphael Mechoulam found that delta 8 THC is an efficient new cannabinoid antiemetic in pediatric oncology.

Researchers administered delta 8 to children ages three to 13 going through chemotherapy that suffered from chemo-associated nausea. The children received their delta 8 THC two hours before the start of each chemo treatment and every six hours after within a 24-hour window. They received their delta 8 THC as oil drops on the tongue or a bite of food.

The researchers noticed a 100% success rate over 480 treatments as the children stopped vomiting completely. The subjects also had a dramatic improvement in their nausea levels.

Delta 8 controlled both acute and delayed nausea and vomiting. The interesting part of the study is that the children didn’t experience any psychoactive effects as a result of the delta 8 THC treatment. Even if the administration of delta 8 THC was at a higher level. Adults do experience mild psychoactive effects with delta 8 THC, but the children proved immune to that effect.

Side Effects of Delta 8 THC

While you can’t overdose on delta 8 THC, there’s a limit to the amount you can consume.

Taking too much delta 8 will make you feel dizzy, drowsy, anxious and can potentially exacerbate your nausea.

In addition, regular consumption of THC (particularly delta 9) can potentially lead to worsening of nausea symptoms. This could lead to cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome or severe vomiting.

Other side effects of delta 8 THC include:

  • Increased heart rate – one 2018 review found that delta-8 significantly slowed heart rate in animals and increased heart rate in humans. This goes to show that the results between animals and humans will vary.
  • Increased blood pressure – one delta 8 THC study performed on animals found that this cannabinoid increased blood pressure. Immediately after increasing the blood pressure, delta-8 caused a drop in the blood pressure and a slower heart rate.

Scientists still need to explore delta 8 THC and its effects on humans. So far, anecdotal evidence shows that both pure delta 8 products and ones mixed with other cannabinoids don’t show major adverse effects. Studies performed on delta 8 THC on animals show that it’s a generally well-tolerated cannabinoid.

Delta 8 THC is a hemp cannabinoid that we know very little about. Before using delta 8 THC for nausea, consult with your doctor. As a rule of thumb, keep your starting doses low, increase gradually and adjust as you start noticing results.
