Delta-8 for Nausea: Does it REALLY Work? [Side-Effects and Where to Buy]

Delta-8 thc for Nausea

Delta-8 THC is a potent antiemetic — possibly the most effective hangover cure you’ll ever come across.

In a search for a hangover cure? Maybe a natural remedy against motion sickness? Scientific evidence testifies about the power of hemp cannabinoids as antiemetics. An antiemetic is an agent with the ability to prevent or treat nausea and vomiting. If you’ve ever used delta-9 or CBD for your hangover, you can forget all about them — delta-8’s power to prevent nausea and vomiting is unmatched. Let’s look at the benefits of delta-8 THC for nausea, its side effects, and where to buy.

What Is Delta-8 THC?

Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, or Δ8THC, is a valuable hemp cannabinoid naturally found in low concentration (less than 0.1%) in the CBD flower. Think of delta-8 as delta-9 THC’s cousin with an almost identical chemical structure, similar benefits but a few advantages. Delta-8 THC is delta-9 THC’s analogue with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, neuroprotective properties. This means that delta-8 helps with nausea and vomiting, causes lower levels of anxiety, stimulates appetite, relieves pain, and prevents aging of nerve cells.

Delta-8 THC expresses lower psychotropic activity than delta-9 THC. Studies show that delta-8 THC is 50 to 75 percent less potent than delta-9 THC, which is why it causes a mild high that keeps the users clear-headed and active.

Delta-8 for Nausea — How Does it Work?

Delta-8’s ability to prevent nausea traces back to the way it influences the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The endocannabinoid system is a cell-signaling system that regulates essential functions in the body. This system balances out the body by mediating sleep, memory and learning, pain, metabolism, fertility, etc.

The endocannabinoid system is made of cannabinoid receptors, endocannabinoids, and enzymes. The two main cannabinoid receptors of the ECS are the CB1 and CB2 receptors. According to the National Cancer Institute, “Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC) binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system [1].” The CB1 receptor is distributed throughout the central and peripheral nervous system and mediates:

  • Psychoactivity
  • Memory processing
  • Pain regulation
  • Motor control

The CB1 receptor has also been identified in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and may play a role in the regulation of food intake, nausea and vomiting, and intestinal inflammation [1].

By binding to the CB1 receptor, delta-8 THC produces its nausea reducing effects. A 2011 review published in the British Journal of Pharmacology curates considerable evidence about the effectiveness of the ECS in regulating nausea and vomiting in humans and animals. The authors of the review conclude that cannabinoids are useful in treating difficult nausea symptoms by acting as agonists of the CB1 receptor. An agonist is a substance that initiates a psychological response when combined with a receptor. This shows that delta-8, delta-9 THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids show significant promise for the treatment of difficult cases of nausea [1].

What the Research Says About Delta-8 THC and Nausea

Delta-8 THC nausea

Delta-8 THC’s antiemetic properties have been recognized. In fact, there are a couple of U.S. patents on the use of delta-8 THC. The first one relates to the conversion of CBD to delta-8 THC, and the second one relates to the antiemetic properties of delta-8 THC. The research for the latter patent discovered that delta-8 THC is up to 200% more effective an antiemetic than delta-9 THC [1].

Compared to other benefits of this cannabinoid, the antiemetic effects of delta-8 THC are best explored. Although little evidence is available, the results are promising.

A 1995 study performed by world-renewed cannabis scientist Raphael Mechoulam found that delta-8 THC is an efficient new cannabinoid antiemetic in pediatric oncology [1].

Researchers administered delta-8 to children ages three to 13 going through chemotherapy that suffered from chemo-associated nausea. The children received their delta-8 THC two hours before the start of each chemo treatment and every six hours after within a 24-hour window. They received their delta-8 THC as oil drops on the tongue or a bite of food.

The researchers noticed a 100% success rate over 480 treatments as the children stopped vomiting completely. Not only that, but the subjects also had a dramatic improvement in their nausea levels. Delta-8 controlled both acute and delayed nausea and vomiting. The interesting part of the study is that the children did not experience any psychoactive effects as a result of the delta-8 THC treatment. Even if the administration of delta-8 THC was in higher levels. Adults do experience mild psychoactive effects with delta-8 THC, but the children proved immune to that effect.

Nausea causes loss of appetite, and delta-8 THC may also help with that. An animal study showed that delta-8 THC improved appetite in mice. Despite working in a similar way as delta-9 to increase appetite, delta-8 THC was a more effective appetite stimulant [1].

Side Effects and Safety Concerns of Delta-8 THC

Delta-8 THC is a secondary hemp cannabinoid that we know very little about. Before using delta-8 THC for nausea consult with your doctor. As a rule of thumb, keep your starting doses low, increase gradually and adjust as you start noticing results.

From the studies performed on delta-8 THC so far, we know that this cannabinoid is generally safe. The 1995 study on children with cancer undergoing chemotherapy noticed that delta-8 THC shows negligible side-effects. Slight irritability in two of the youngest patients was the only side-effect noticed.

Other side-effects of delta-8 THC include:

  • Increased heart rate – one 2018 review found that delta-8 significantly slowed heart rate in animals and increased heart rate in humans. This goes to show that the results between animals and humans will vary [1].
  • Increased blood pressure – one delta-8 THC study performed on animals found that this cannabinoid increased blood pressure. Immediately after increasing the blood pressure, delta-8 caused a drop in the blood pressure and a slower heart rate [1].

Scientists still need to explore delta-8 THC and its effects on humans. So far, anecdotal evidence shows that both pure delta-8 products and ones mixed with other cannabinoids don’t show major adverse effects.
