Hemp and hemp-derived products have been legal in Alaska since Governor Walker signed SB 6 on April 13, 2018. The bill made Alaska the 35th state in the U.S. to allow hemp cultivation.

In May 2019, the Alaska Department of Natural Resources proposed industrial hemp rules, which provided a detailed outline on growing, processing, and testing hemp.

Later in August 2019, Alaska officials decided against the funding of an industrial hemp program. Although many were hoping for the rules to create new opportunities for Alaska farmers, unfortunately, the hemp industry in this state didn’t take off as expected.

Retailers selling hemp CBD in this state are not licensed and are currently subject to federal regulations. As of the writing of this article, the FDA has not issued a statement regarding the use of CBD in the U.S.
