Cannabis

ˈka-nə-bəs | Noun

A complex plant often classified into three main types, Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. The beauty of this plant lies in its versatility expressed through different concentrations of cannabinoids and terpenes. Cannabis sativa L. with low concentrations of THC is known as hemp. On the other hand, cannabis with high THC concentrations, typically used recreationally, is known as marijuana.

“Did you know that both hemp and marijuana are varieties of cannabis with different levels of THC?”

“I’ve always been curious about taking cannabis for my chronic pain.”

What Is It?

The value of this plant comes from its chemical compounds, aka cannabinoids and terpenes. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the main cannabinoid in marijuana, while CBD is in hemp. THC is the main reason for the stigma around it because this compound exhibits psychotropic effects. So, when CBD entered the picture, it relieved the preconceptions that it’s a “bad” plant and triggered researchers to dig deep into its chemical structure.

The market today offers various products meant for both recreational and medicinal purposes. Consumers buy it in the form of a smokable flower, concentrates, topicals, edibles and other infused items. Historically, this plant was the medical and social staple for many civilizations, gaining notoriety during the 19th century.

Is It Legal?

Hemp and hemp-derived products are legal in the United States on a federal level. Marijuana is legal only in about a dozen states, and medical cannabis is legal in most states. People use it for its pleasurable effects or to soothe symptoms of various conditions like anxiety and chronic pain.
