  • Gary Payton — Highest Potency

We find it remarkable that the THCa hemp flower with the highest potency on our list is named after the NBA Hall of Famer. Believe it or not, this indica/sativa hybrid is as excellent as its name implies — it comes at 29+% total THC.

In addition, it contains 1.06% cannabigerolic acid (CBGa), which contributes to its therapeutic profile — even at this low amount. As a strain with high potency and buds packed in terpenes, this strain is best suited for the nighttime and those hours in nature when you can let your mind rest.

What Is High THCa Flower?

It’s a hemp bud with low levels of delta 9 THC (less than 0.3%) and high levels of THCa.

When the THCa gets heated, it turns to THC. So consuming this THCa flower will get you intoxicated as the real cannabis flower.

Some people try to sell marijuana flower as high THCa flower, so be careful when shopping for this product. The best way to distinguish between marijuana, in this case, or cannabis buds marketed as hemp, and hemp is to check the levels of delta 9 THC — they should always be lower than 0.3% with hemp.

Is THCa Flower Just Cannabis in Disguise?

THCa flower is considered hemp flower because it contains less than 0.3% delta 9 THC.

But in essence, there is no difference in the total THC content between THCa flower and regular marijuana flower.

Let’s explain this further using an example.

If we take the lab results of Pineapple OG, a high THCa strain, we can notice that it contains 0.28% total delta 9 THC. These levels are within the requirements of the 2018 Farm Bill for hemp.

For comparison, if you take this same strain of cannabis flower that’s sold on the recreational market, you can notice that it contains up to 26% THCa and between 0.8% and 1% delta 9 THC.

Unless you live in a state that allows the sale of recreational marijuana (or medical), you won’t be legally allowed to order or buy the strain with over 0.3% delta 9 THC.

Sounds crazy, right?

The only difference between these two strains that contain absolutely high THC content after conversion is the delta 9 THC levels. Both strains will get you heavily intoxicated if smoked, but only one of them you can order online.

THC vs. THCa in Hemp Flower

What is the THC content in hemp flower compared to the THCa content?

So the THC content, as said above, is the delta 9 THC concentration in the flower. The levels of THC determine whether or not a flower strain is legal after harvest.

The THCa content is THC that hasn’t been heated yet.

The THCa content determines the amount of THC you will receive once the flower is decarboxylated (heated).

THCa, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is the precursor of THC in the cannabis plant and is a biologically inactive compound. As an acid, THCa doesn’t have any psychoactive effects, but it does have beneficial effects on the body.

When you smoke or vape THCa flower, the THCa transforms into delta 9 THC by losing its extra carboxyl ring. If you want to use THCa flower for cooking, you’ll have to decarb it in the oven first.

FAQs on High THCa Flower Strains

Any strain with a THCa content above 15% is considered a strain with a high THCa percentage.

As you can notice, the THCa flower strains listed in this article fall in this category. But keep in mind that the quality of the strain doesn’t solely depend on the THC levels after decarboxylation.

Terpenes play a big role in how the strain makes you feel and how much you benefit from it — an effect known as entourage.

The entourage effect theory suggests that terpenes and cannabinoids in the cannabis flower work in synergy to boost the beneficial effects of the strain. Experts assume that this is why taking synthetic THC doesn’t have the same medicinal benefits as taking the real flower [1].

THCa flower that contains less than 0.3% delta 9 THC is legal under the Farm Bill.

Thanks to a loophole in the Farm Bill, any product that contains a delta 9 THC concentration of 0.3% or less is considered legal in the US. There is an exception to this rule in states like Oregon, which test for total THC after the hemp plant has been harvested.

In these states, THCa flower is not lawful unless the total THC content (THCa + THC) doesn’t exceed the federal limit of 0.3%.
